OFF-WORLD NEWS DIGEST | VOL. V, No. 5

Welcome to another edition of the OFF-WORLD NEWS Digest.

In the news ...

CraveOnline caught up with director Denis Villeneuve, and asked him his thoughts on whether Deckard was a human or replicant, to which he replied: “Now that I am on the other side of the fence, I cannot answer.” Villeneuve did go on to say that the mystery will be something they address in the film and that re-contextualizing the original film with any answers they present in the sequel is a concern of his. “The thing I must say is that I love mystery. I love shadows. I love doubts. I would just want to say to the fans that we will take care of that mystery. I will take care of it.”  [Source: comingsoon.net]

What's happening with your "Blade Runner" sequel?

"I just finished the shoot of a movie this summer, so I can say that I’m in prep now for this project. It’s going to be a super long prep, a lot of thinking, a lot of dreaming. You need to dream a lot, so that’s where we are right now, we’re in the dreaming process."

And it will re-team you with Roger Deakins.

"Roger is a master. But I feel that we are two different animals, but there’s something about the language that we share, a way of seeing and approaching cinema that strangely it works, so I love working with him. For me it’s a privilege, because every shot I am learning. I just did a movie, Roger was not available this summer and I just did a movie with another cinematographer that I love, Bradford Young. Very strong. Very strong, brilliant DP. But every time I was doing a shot with Bradford, I was hearing Roger in my head saying, "don’t do that, go there, put the camera there, don’t do that movement, faster." It was a massive privilege to make movies with him, and to do a third with him is a big gift."  [Source:  indiewire.com]

Though we know that Denis Villeneuve will reunite with Roger Deakins for the film, we still don’t know much about what this new Blade Runner sequel will be. Deakins was recently asked about the film, and said the sequel is “definitely going to happen” and is an “entirely separate movie” from the 1982 original. Deakins concedes the look of the original was “really superb” but that won’t impact how he shoots the sequel. "I’m not gonna do shafts of light coming through a window with rain just for the sake of doing shafts of light and rain." He couldn’t reveal any of the details of the film’s plot, but did say that the sequel will “stand by itself.” “Obviously, it has elements that connect it to the original, but it’s going to stand alone by itself as a movie […] This script is not the old script. It’s not a remake. It’s another take on the story. It’s a progression.”

While Deakins and Villeneuve collaborating for what would be their third movie is exciting enough, many fans of the original are still left scratching their heads as to why they’re even making another Blade Runner movie. Deakins explains: "I love science fiction, I absolutely love science fiction […] I did think twice about it, because Blade Runner, the original is so wonderful, but […] there’s so few good science fiction films out there, that it deserves another. They made about 20 Planet of the Apes and they still haven’t made one as good as the original. They only ever made one Blade Runner, so I think we can do another one." In other news, Bud Yorkin, one of the producers of Blade Runner, died August 18, 2015 at his home in the Bel Air area of Los Angeles of natural causes. He was 89. When Blade Runner ran into financial trouble, Yorkin helped raise funds to complete the 1982 Ridley Scott film and thus owned the copyright. He talked about a sequel for years, and had agreed to produce the sequel, along with his wife Cynthia Sikes, and Alcon’s Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson.

OFF-WORLD NEWS DIGEST | VOL. V, No. 4

Welcome to another edition of the OFF-WORLD NEWS Digest.

In the news ...

Blade Runner debuted on this day -- June 25, 1982 -- in over 1200 theatres, throughout the United States.

The Blade Runner sequel will re-team director Denis Villeneuve with legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins. Here is the statement from Alcon Entertainment CEOs Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove, with regard to Deakins joining the Blade Runner 2 creative team: “Roger is an extraordinary talent and we are very excited that Denis and Roger have chosen to continue their collaboration in bringing the sequel to Blade Runner to the big screen.” More HERE.

In an article from Indiewire, Villeneuve said, "It's something that I knew about [for] a while obviously, and I was looking forward [to when] it would be announced. For me, it's so exciting. Roger and I have been dreaming to make a sci-fi movie since the first day we met. He is really, really excited about the project. For me, he is my biggest ally, and honestly I know doing it with him the movie will look astonishing. It is very exciting to do that with him."

The Blade Runner sequel is in the works as the film's list of cast and crew is slowly being revealed. It will be set several decades after the original movie, and will be made up of a three-act storyline. Harrison Ford is officially on board, while Ryan Gosling is rumored to join the cast.

According to Ridley Scott, Ford's 'Rick Deckard' character will play a big role in the sequel. He said that the movie will be divided into a three-act storyline and Ford's 'Deckard' will arrive on the third act. "We talked at length about what it could be, and came up with a pretty strong three-act storyline, and it all makes sense it terms of how it relates to the first one. Harrison is very much part of this one, but really it's about finding him; he comes in the third act." Scott said.

Aside from Deckard, a female protagonist is said to be included in the film -- although there are no reports yet as to the actress to play the role.

Alcon Entertainment's co-CEOs, Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson seem to be pretty impressed with Scott, Fancher, and Green's work with the story and screenplay. "Hampton and Michael, with Ridley, have crafted a uniquely potent and faithful sequel to one of the most universally celebrated films of all time, and we couldn't be more thrilled with this amazing, creative team." they said.

More details about the movie is expected to be released soon. No release date has been announced for the movie yet, although, filming is said to start in summer 2016. [Source: VCPost]

Blade Runner continues to grace the big screen across the globe. In addition to the United States, Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Australia, the Netherlands, Belgium, New Zealand, and Vietnam, we can add France to the list -- showing in October. [Again, there may have been, or will be, more dates scheduled in other countries, but I have not come across such news as of this writing.] For a list of showings, you may go to the Off-worldNews Twitter feed

OFF-WORLD NEWS DIGEST | VOL. V, No. 3

Welcome to another edition of the OFF-WORLD NEWS Digest.

In the news ...

Speaking in an interview with John Hazelton in Screen and Telefilm Canada’s Cannes Special supplement, Denis Villeneuve admits the prospect of tackling a Blade Runner sequel was intimidating. “Let’s say it wasn’t an easy decision to make,” he said, “because I’m a massive Blade Runner fan, it’s one of my favourite movies.” He continues, “So I’m going there with a great amount of humility and a great amount of deep joy. And I know I can do it.”

The project is scheduled for a summer 2016 star and will star Ryan Gosling alongside Harrison Ford, who reprises his role as Rick Deckard several decades after the events in Scott’s 1982 original. Plot points remain under wraps. [Source]

And in THIS article, this question was posed to Villeneuve, Many sci-fi fans are saying that no one should attempt to make a sequel to Blade Runner, after all these years. What do you say to them?
"You know what?" he replied. "To be honest, I had the same reaction at the beginning. For me, Blade Runner is a cult movie. It’s really one of my favourite films of all time. I’m a big sci-fi addict and that movie is by far one of my favourites if not my favourite, with 2001: A Space Odyssey. So when they said they were doing a sequel I said, That is a fantastic, genius and maybe bad idea. I was very excited, but at the same time a bit afraid. And when I got the chance to read the script, I understood. Ridley Scott (now producer) and Hampton Fancher (original co-writer, now co-producer) came with a very strong idea and a very exciting one. Honestly, I think that the fans will agree with me. It’s really a strong movie." And he wrapped up the question with the following. "To be honest with you, unfortunately, I cannot say more. From a creative point of view, I can say nothing. All I can tell you is that I deeply love the first movie and I will do everything to honour this privilege."

Blade Runner continues to grace the big screen across the globe. In addition to England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Australia, and the United States; we can add the Netherlands, Belgium, and New Zealand to the list. This is a previously unreleased demo from MEMORIA -- Blade Runner: The Rock Project"On the Run" represents the point of the film when Zhora flees from Deckard at Taffy Lewis' Snake Pit Bar. This is one of twenty-five songs from "Blade Runner: The Rock Project" -- music inspired by the movie Blade Runner. This song contains an excerpt from William Blake's poem, "AMERICA a PROPHECY", written 1793. In the movie Blade Runner, the character Roy Batty paraphrases these lines. This excerpt is the actual stanza. The second verse is slightly modified to exalt the death of Zhora. Then, in the third, returns to the original.
