‘Blade Runner 2049’ Finds Second Life on DVD and Blu-Ray With Over $21 Million in 2018 Sales Box office hits "It" and "Wonder" are also doing huge business on home video this year. Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049” was an unfortunate flop for Warner Bros. during its theatrical release last year. Despite earning critical acclaim (IndieWire gave the film an A- review), the long-awaited sequel just couldn’t catch on in theaters. “2049” tapped out with just $92 million in the U.S. and $259 million worldwide, well below the estimated $300 million the studio spent on production and marketing. But it turns out the sequel is still making money. Read more HERE.

The following vids are of a series of special episodes that were created by the "Let's Play Blade Runner" team. The aim is basically to see as much as possible of the material in the game, and what is impossible to see with a single playthrough. The basic idea here, by the creators, was that each playthrough of the game was (potentially) different from the previous ones, thus increasing the replayability value. The missing content was recreated using the BladeRunner engine (WIP) in ScummVM. Enjoy!

In the news ...

Where Blade Runner began: 50 years of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? ~Ananyo Bhattacharya toasts Philip K. Dick’s prescient science-fiction classic.~ When science-fiction writer Peter Watts first opened Philip K. Dick’s 1968 Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, a word caught his eye. It was “friendlily”. How had Dick got that past an editor? As Watts told me: “I knew at that point that Dick had to be some kind of sick genius.” Further on in the novel are the boldly redundant “disemelevatored” and the sublime “kipple” — a word for ‘junk’ that encapsulates the stuff’s sinister tendency to multiply entropically. Only William Shakespeare coined neologisms as brazenly.

Yet to debate Dick’s strengths as a stylist is to miss the point of Androids. For, as with much of his oeuvre (44 novels, 121 short stories and 14 short-story collections), it is ideas that propel the book into the imaginative stratosphere — and inspired director Ridley Scott to craft the masterly 1982 film adaptation, Blade Runner. Roger Deakins wins Cinematography Oscar for Blade Runner 2049. Roger A. Deakins has long been considered one of the best cinematographers in the world, but while he’s being nominated for 13 Oscars, he had yet to win. That changed when Deakins won for Achievement in Cinematography for his work on Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049. More HERE.

'Blade Runner 2049' Wins Best Visual Effects. It was the second Academy Award for Blade Runner 2049's VFX supervisor John Nelson, who previously won for Gladiator in 2001. It was the first Oscar for Gerd Nefzer, Paul Lambert, and Richard R. Hoover. More HERE.

Deckard's Dog in 'Blade Runner 2049' Wins Inaugural Palm Dog USA in the Year of the Dog. The Palm Dog, the cinematic canine competition that has become a mutt-hailing mainstay of the Cannes Film Festival, held its first ever awards ceremony in the U.S. The whiskey-drinking dog star of Blade Runner 2049 has won the inaugural Palm Dog USA award. The performance of Bo, the canine pal of Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), captured the judge’s imagination as the Palm Dog Awards made its US debut. Palm Dog Jury chair Toby Rose said: “The fate of Deckard’s whiskey-drinking dog may remain a mystery. But to the judges, it was an exemplary performance showing the importance of the canine-human relationship even in a replicant’s world.” [Source HERE.]

Thirty-five years after the release of Blade Runner, the visual language of contemporary science fiction is still drawing from the dark and rainy vision of Los Angeles set in an imagined future. This past year saw a direct continuation of that vision with Blade Runner 2049, trading rain for the snow to suit Canadian director Denis Villeneuve's sensibilities as he pushed past the legacy left by the original, asking new questions and expanding the scope both technically and emotionally. Both films are presented here on the big screen, including Ridley Scott's definitive Final Cut (2007).
