Welcome to another edition of the OFF-WORLD NEWS Digest.

In the news ...

  • Speaking recently on Variety's “Playback” podcast, Blade Runner 2049's director, Denis Villeneuve, called the sequel to Ridley Scott’s revered 1982 original the riskiest project of his career.
“I feel [the pressure] every day,” Villeneuve says. “At the same time, I’ve never been that inspired and excited. I love risk. All of my projects have come with a certain amount of artistic risk, or sometimes a risk of how you portray reality."

  • Director Says CGI Will Take a Back Seat to Practical Effects in Blade Runner 2049
“I think I can count on one hand how many times I saw a green screen in all of those months of shooting,” he said. “There will be CG enhancements, of course, but as much as possible it was in-camera.”

  • Blade Runner enthusiasts have been waiting, and debating, over the sequel, Blade Runner 2049, ever since it was first announced back in 2011. The first Blade Runner 2049 trailer debuted a few months ago, and photos released two months ago -- which has certainly helped raise anticipation to an all-time high. Lennie James, an actor cast to be in the sequel, explains how secretive the production really was, even surpassing the secrecy of The Walking Dead
"They offered me the job. It came out of the blue and I said, 'I need to read the script.' They sent me 20 pages before my character arrived and 20 pages after my character was gone. It was on an app thing that I could only open on one device. I couldn't take a screenshot, I couldn't take a photograph, I couldn't save it. They said, 'You've got 36 hours.' I had 36 hours with it and then it was gone. Then I had to make a decision to do it. When I did [decide to do it], they sent me the whole script."

  • ‘Blade Runner’ Writer Hampton Fancher Documentary Gets Summer Release
Grasshopper Film has bought all U.S. distribution rights to Michael Almereyda’s Hampton Fancher documentary “Escapes,” which is executive produced by Wes Anderson.

“Escapes” will open in theaters this summer followed by a VOD and home video release in the fall. Fancher is best known as producer and screenwriter of the iconic sci-fi movie “Blade Runner,” as well as screenwriter on the upcoming sequel “Blade Runner 2049.” The sequel, starring Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling, opens Oct. 6.

Fancher wrote the “Blade Runner” script with David Peoples for the 1982 original, adapted from the Philip Dick story “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” and directed by Ridley Scott. He teamed with Michael Green for “Blade Runner 2049,” directed by Denis Villeneuve.

The documentary includes extensive archival footage as Fancher describes romantic misadventures, two brief marriages, and wayward acts of jealousy, chivalry, and friendship.
